When we think of Wales, we picture ancient castles, rugged landscapes, and friendly people. Less well known, but just as beautiful, are the many lakes in Wales. Some natural, some man-made reservoirs, these “diamonds of water” nestle in the picturesque Welsh landscape. It is well worth getting to know these waters better and enjoying a good time on their shores.

- We trust you that you have really circumnavigated the lakes. However, if you want to be included in the time ranking, we need a copy of your tracking. We don't care what you use (watch, smartphone or app).
General PLEASE NOTE!
- Please note that traffic rules apply in public traffic areas and along roads and cycle paths. So move with consideration.
- You circumnavigate the lakes at your own risk and at your own risk. The operator of this website assumes no liability.
- Please heed medical advice if necessary or have a medical examination before the start of the Challenge. You are responsible for your own health, equipment and condition. Breaking off a tour is not a disgrace, health always comes first!

The ten largest lakes in Wales
Llyn Tegit (Bala Lake)
Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake) lies on the eastern border of Eryri National Park and is the largest natural body of water in Wales. Llyn Tegid is notorious for sudden floods. According to local legend, there is a monster in the lake, but we doubt that ;-). The circumference of the largest lake in Wales is approximately 32 kilometers.

Tour recommendations for circumnavigating Llyn Tegit
Llyn Brianne
Walking around Llyn Brianne is a real treat. You hike through beautiful countryside and there are numerous picnic spots that invite you to take a break. This route takes you on a long loop (approx. 24 km) through the woods and fields around the reservoir.

Tour recommendations for circumnavigating Llyn Brianne:
Llyn Clywedog
Clywedog Reservoir is a reservoir near Llanidloes, at the source of the River Severn. The area around Llyn Clywedog offers many marked hiking trails, including the Glyndŵr's Way National Trail and the Severn Way. Follow the path in Hafren Forest to the source of the River Severn at Pumlumon Fawr. The circuit is between 25km and 30km long (depending on the tour you choose).

Tour recommendations for circumnavigating Llyn Clywedog:
Llyn Padarn
Llyn Padarn is located in Snowdonia National Park and is the big brother of Llyn Peris. It is one of the largest natural lakes in Wales and was formed by a glacier. Walking around it requires a hike of approximately 8.5 km.

Tour recommendations for circumnavigating Llyn Padarn:
Llyn Peris
Llyn Peris is a glacial lake in Snowdonia National Park. It is the smaller twin of Llyn Padarn, which lies right next to it. The circumference is only about seven kilometers long, but it is really beautiful.

Tour recommendations for circumnavigating Llyn Peris:
Llyn Cowlyd
Llyn Cowlyd is the deepest lake in North Wales and is also located in Snowdonia National Park, at the upper end of Cwm Cowlyd on the southeastern edge of the Carneddau mountain range. The lake, nestled in beautiful countryside, can be circumnavigated via various trails. The walk around the lake (if you stick to the shore) is only about 12 km long, but we recommend the longer tour because the landscape is enchanting.

Tour recommendations for circumnavigating Llyn Cowlyd:
Llyn Geirionydd
Llyn Geirionydd is located in a valley in North Wales, where the northern edge of Gwydyr Forest meets the lower slopes of the Carneddau Mountains. As the lake is only a few kilometers long, we recommend extending your walk a little to experience the wonderful surrounding area.

Tour recommendations for circumnavigating Llyn Geirionydd:
Llyn Cwellyn
Llyn Cwellyn is a reservoir in North Wales that supplies parts of Gwynedd and Anglesey with drinking water. The walk around Llyn Cwellyn can of course be kept very short or extended to a slightly longer route to enjoy the scenery. It is between 6 km and approx. 15 km long.

Tour recommendations for circumnavigating Llyn Cwellyn:
Llyn Ogwen
Llyn Ogwen is idyllically situated between two mountain ranges in Snowdonia, the Carneddau and the Glyderau. The walk around Llyn Ogwen is not actually very long. But we have chosen a route for you that is about 7 km long and allows you to see the lake from above.

Recommended route for walking around Llyn Ogwen:
Llyn Idwal
The small Llyn Idwal is located in the Glyderau Mountains of Snowdonia. It is said to be named after Prince Idwal Foel, a grandson of Rhodri Mawr, one of the ancient kings of Wales. Legend has it that the unfortunate descendant of the king was murdered by drowning in the lake. The circumference is approximately 5 kilometers.
