Lazio is Italy's lake region par excellence. The number of its lakes exceeds all other Italian regions in terms of diversity. Here you will find coastal lakes, lakes of volcanic origin, artificial basins, glacial lakes, spring lakes, rock lakes and even moors and ponds. It is said that Lazio even holds the European record for volcanic lakes, i.e. lakes that have formed in the craters of extinct volcanoes. It is therefore worth spending time on the shores of these lakes or in their cool waters. But what about walking around the ten largest lakes in Lazio and earning the coveted Iron Lake Challenge collector's medal in the "Lazio" version?
RULES
The rules for Iron Lake Challenge Lazio are very simple. Nevertheless, we would like to clarify them once again at this point:
- Sign up for the Iron Lake Challenge Latium!
- To conquer the Iron Lake Challenge Lazio and earn the beautiful collector's medal, you must walk around the ten largest lakes in Lazio after registering. Lakes that are partly on the territory of other federal states are not included in this challenge.
- Bicycles, skates, etc. are not allowed, but you are welcome to hike or run.
- Each lake must be circumnavigated "in one piece" unless special rules apply (see below in the descriptions of the lakes). Do only one lake per day, because you want to enjoy this time!
- The Iron Lake Challenge Latium has no time limit. This means that you can cycle around the ten lakes over several years.
- We trust you that you have really circumnavigated the lakes. However, if you want to be included in the time ranking, we need a copy of your tracking. We don't care what you use (watch, smartphone or app).
General PLEASE NOTE!
- Please note that traffic rules apply in public traffic areas and along roads and cycle paths. So move with consideration.
- You circumnavigate the lakes at your own risk and at your own risk. The operator of this website assumes no liability.

The ten largest lakes in Lazio
Lake Bolsena
Lake Bolsena (Italian Lago di Bolsena) is 113.5 km² in size and is located around 90 kilometers north of Rome in the province of Viterbo. It is almost completely circular, which is due to the fact that water has collected in the caldera of a former volcano. Lake Bolsena is only fed by rainwater and underground springs, which is why it takes around 120 years for its water (which is of excellent quality) to be completely replaced. There are two small islands in the lake. For many centuries, various popes had their residences on Lake Bolsena. Walking around the lake gives you 43 kilometers of beautiful shoreline.
Route recommendations for circumnavigating Lake Bolsena:
Lago di Bracciano
Lake Bracciano (Lago di Bracciano) is a circular lake located around 35 kilometers north of the city center of Rome. At 57.5 km², it is the second largest lake in Lazio and is also a filled caldera of a volcano. Hot mineral springs and gas leaks in its surroundings are impressive proof of its volcanic origin. The lakeshore is shared by the municipalities of Anguillara Sabazia, Bracciano and Trevignano Romano. To circumnavigate Lago di Bracciano, you have to walk around 33 kilometers.
Tour recommendations for the circumnavigation of Lago di Bracciano:
Lago di Paola
The 14.74 km² Lake Paola (also known as the "Sabaudia Lagoon" or "Sabaudia Lake") is a brackish water lake which (like Lake Fogliano) has gained international importance as a wetland. Finds of ancient villas and cisterns date back to the 1st century BC, while Emperor Nero later ordered the construction of the Roman canal. Monks later settled here. The circular route on foot is approx. 26 kilometers long.

Lago di Vico
Lake Vico (12.93 km²) is also a crater lake of volcanic origin and is located northwest of Rome, surrounded by the rocky hills of the "Monte Cimini". According to an ancient legend, the lake was formed when the mythological hero Heracles punched a hole in the ground with his club to prove his strength. In reality, however, it is a caledera filled with spring and rainwater from an ancient volcano. Lago di Vico is the center of the nature reserve "Riserva Naturale del Lago di Vico" and its location is beautiful. A walk around the lake is highly recommended and offers you around 25 kilometers (depending on the tour you choose) of wonderful nature and great moments.

Lago del Salto
The approx. 10 km² Lago del Salto is an artificial lake created by a dam and embedded in a mountainous forest area. A walk around the lake is about 40 kilometers long.

Lago Albano
The approx. 6 km² large Albano lake (Lago Albano) lies to the south of Rome and on its shores is the famous "Castelgandolfo", the papal residence outside the Vatican. The water level of Lake Albano is regulated by an ancient drainage tunnel. Since the mid-1990s, the water level of the lake has dropped significantly. The reason for this is the high water consumption of the surrounding communities and the papal gardens. A walk around the lake gives you around 10 kilometers of shoreline.

Lago del Turano
Following the construction of the dam wall, the now approx. 5.6 km2 Lago del Turano was formed in October 1938 after heavy rainfall. The name "Tora" is derived from the ancient site of Thiora in the Sabine mountains. The lake is difficult to circumnavigate completely, which is why our suggested route (via the bridge) is approx. 17 kilometers long. But we would be happy to receive further suggestions from you.

Lago di Fogliano
Lago di Fogliano is the largest of the "Pontine coastal lakes" (Fogliano, Caprolace, Monaci, Paola) with its 3.95 km2. It is part of the protected area of the Circeo National Park, which has gained international importance as a wetland. Archaeological finds prove that this area was already inhabited in prehistoric times and was also used for fish farming in Roman times. You have to walk around 13 kilometers to complete the entire circuit.

Lago di Fondi
The approximately 3.8 km2 Lago di Fondi forms naturally in a depression that is constantly filled with spring water that emerges from the foot of the mountains. In addition to the spring water streams, a series of canals have been built to drain the water from the marshland below sea level into the lake. The lake belongs to the so-called "transitional waters", which are generally very species-rich.

Lago di Martignano
Lago di Martignano is located very close to the eastern shore of Lago di Bracciano and, at 2.44 km², is not particularly large. The lake is located in the protected zone of the Regional Natural Park of the Lakes of Bracciano and Martignano. It is also of volcanic origin and the ancient Romans were already aware of its beauty, so much so that they built the first villas on its shores. In 1972, the exterior shots of the fairy's house for the Pinocchio film series took place here. To walk around the lake on foot, you have to reckon with a 14-kilometre walk along the shore.
