Sunny Puglia is also known as the heel of Italy's boot. It is famous for its wonderful beaches, the sunshine, the sea and the famous trulli. Thousands of sun-seeking vacationers spend the best time of the year on the Gargano every year and every town and village has a lot of history to offer.
Puglia's many lakes are rather unknown. But that's actually a shame, because they are diverse and definitely worth a visit.
Wie wäre es, wenn Du die zehn größten Seen Apuliens zu Fuß umrundest und Dir die begehrte Sammlermedaille der Iron Lake Challenge in der Edition „Puglia“ verdienst? Du weißt ja…. „You were only really where you were on foot„.
RULES
The rules for Iron Lake Challenge Puglia are very simple. Nevertheless, we would like to clarify them once again at this point:
- Sign up for the Iron Lake Challenge Apulia!
- To conquer the Iron Lake Challenge Apulia and earn the beautiful collector's medal, you have to walk around the ten largest lakes in Apulia after you have registered. Lakes that are partly on the territory of other states are not included in this challenge.
- Bicycles, skates, etc. are not allowed, but you are welcome to hike or run.
- Each lake must be circumnavigated "in one piece" unless special rules apply (see below in the descriptions of the lakes). This means that you are welcome to take breaks, but you should complete the lake within one day. Of course you can divide the 10 lakes into different days. Do only one lake per day, because you want to enjoy this time!
- The Iron Lake Challenge Apulia has no time limit. This means that you can cycle around the ten lakes over several years.
- We trust you that you have really circumnavigated the lakes. However, if you want to be included in the time ranking, we need a copy of your tracking. We don't care what you use (watch, smartphone or app).
General PLEASE NOTE!
- Please note that traffic rules apply in public traffic areas and along roads and cycle paths. So move with consideration.
- You circumnavigate the lakes at your own risk and at your own risk. The operator of this website assumes no liability.
- Please heed medical advice if necessary or have a medical examination before the start of the Challenge. You are responsible for your own health, equipment and condition. Breaking off a tour is not a disgrace, health always comes first!
A few important rules for dealing with nature during your lake tour:
- Please take into account the local instructions for the protection of nature.
- Please do not go off the trails.
- Please do not make noise.
- Please do not collect rocks or minerals.
- Please do not collect mushrooms.
- Please do not leave any garbage lying around. Quite the opposite. Many of us even collect garbage.
- Please do not feed animals.
- Please do not make an open fire.
- Please do not pick plants.
This should be obvious to all of us, but it doesn't hurt to remember it from time to time.

The ten largest lakes in Puglia
We were surprised at how many large lakes there are in beautiful Puglia. Lago di Cillarese should actually be on our list. However, we were told that it can only be circumnavigated via busy roads, which is why we decided not to include it.
Lago di Lesina
Lake Lèsina is a typical coastal lake (lagoon) with an elongated shape that runs parallel to the coast. Its water is salty and rich in fish (eel, mullet, etc.) as it is connected to the Adriatic Sea. Nevertheless, it also has its own groundwater and springs.

Lago di Varano
A few kilometers away from Lago di Lesina, separated by a hill (Monte d'Elio), lies Lake Varano with an area of 51.36 km². It is the seventh largest lake in Italy. In the past, numerous bird species nested on the shores of the two lakes. Even if there are not as many today as there used to be, it is still very popular with birds of all kinds. You can expect to cover around 46 kilometers on foot. However, you have two days to do this.

Lago di Occhito
Lake Occhito is a large artificial reservoir in the Foggia region, created by a barrage on the Fortore River. In terms of capacity, it is the second largest artificial reservoir in Europe. Depending on the tour you choose, a circumnavigation will take you around 55 km. You have two days for this.

Alimini Grande
The Alimini Lakes are located north of Otranto and are by far one of the most beautiful natural areas in Salento. They consist of a large, protected oasis. The Alimini Grande is the larger of two bodies of water, situated on a magnificent stretch of coastline. It is surrounded by a dense pine forest and typical Mediterranean flora. A walk around it is about 10 kilometers long.

Alimini Piccolo
The smaller of the two Alimini lakes, the Alimini Piccolo is fed by freshwater springs and is much shallower than its big brother. The salt content is also much lower because - unlike the Alimini Grande - it is not affected and deepened by water flowing in and out with the tides. A circumnavigation of the Alimini Piccolo is about 7 kilometers long.

Lago Locone
Lake Locone is a lake in the province of Barletta-Andria-Trani. The construction of the dam required the flooding of a valley and transformed it into a rich habitat where you can now observe herons, cormorants and other birds as well as a variety of fish such as black bass and carp. You should expect to cover a distance of around 30 kilometers on foot.

Lago Salso

The Celone reservoir (also known as Diga Capaccio) is located in the Foggia area and is surrounded by fields and meadows. Unfortunately, you will have to walk a little further around the lake, which means you will need to walk about 15 kilometers.

Lago Capacciotti (Stausee)
Lake Capacciotti (reservoir) is an important ecological corridor between the Adriatic coast and the Apennines. It is a popular destination for migratory birds and therefore also for Birdwatchers, but also for nature lovers of all kinds. To walk around it, you have to reckon with a distance of approx. 22 kilometers.

Lago Pappadai
The Pappadai reservoir was built to supply a large part of southern Italy with water. Unfortunately, however, there were problems with supplying the reservoir with sufficient water, which is why it never reached the size that was intended. Today you can walk around it in about 6 kilometers.
