Denmark can look back on a long tradition and eventful history and forms the link in Europe between Scandinavia and the rest of mainland Europe. The country is famous for its thousands of islands, its rugged coastline and has Europe's only direct border with Canada in Greenland. But Denmark also has numerous beautiful lakes, which have a charm all of their own with their naturalness and wealth of flora and fauna.
How about walking around Denmark's ten largest lakes and collecting the coveted Iron Lake Challenge collector's medal in the “Denmark” edition?

RULES
The rules for Iron Lake Challenge Denmark are very simple. Nevertheless, we would like to clarify them once again at this point:
- Sign up for the Iron Lake Challenge Denmark!
- To conquer the Iron Lake Challenge Denmark and earn the beautiful collector's medal, you have to walk around the ten largest lakes in Denmark after you have registered. Lakes that are partly on the territory of other countries are not included in this challenge.
- Bicycles, skates, etc. are not allowed, but you are welcome to hike or run.
- Each lake must be circumnavigated "in one piece" unless special rules apply (see below in the descriptions of the lakes). This means that you are welcome to take breaks, but you should complete the lake within one day. Of course you can divide the 10 lakes into different days. Do only one lake per day, because you want to enjoy this time!
- The Iron Lake Challenge Denmark has no time limit. This means that you can cycle around the ten lakes over several years.
- We trust you that you have really circumnavigated the lakes. However, if you want to be included in the time ranking, we need a copy of your tracking. We don't care what you use (watch, smartphone or app).
General PLEASE NOTE!
- Please note that traffic rules apply in public traffic areas and along roads and cycle paths. So move with consideration.
- You circumnavigate the lakes at your own risk and at your own risk. The operator of this website assumes no liability.
- Please heed medical advice if necessary or have a medical examination before the start of the Challenge. You are responsible for your own health, equipment and condition. Breaking off a tour is not a disgrace, health always comes first!
A few important rules for dealing with nature during your lake tour:
- Please take into account the local instructions for the protection of nature.
- Please do not go off the trails.
- Please do not make noise.
- Please do not collect rocks or minerals.
- Please do not collect mushrooms.
- Please do not leave any garbage lying around. Quite the opposite. Many of us even collect garbage.
- Please do not feed animals.
- Please do not make an open fire.

This should be obvious to all of us, but it doesn't hurt to remember it from time to time.

The ten largest lakes in Denmark
Denmark's lakes really are very varied and beautiful. Unfortunately, we were unable to include the brackish water lake Saltbæk Vig, as it could only be circumnavigated via the dyke, which is not accessible due to nature conservation regulations. Tømmerby Fjord should also be listed as one of Denmark's ten largest lakes, but it can only be circumnavigated via a busy road, which is why we decided against it.
Arresø
Arresø was originally a fjord arm of the Kattegat and was formed around 2000 to 3000 years ago when the land north of the lake slowly rose, separating the lake from the sea. Today, the lake is an important bird sanctuary and is also popular with local recreationists. The circumnavigation of the lake is approx. 41 kilometers long (depending on the route taken)

Lake Esrom
Lake Esrom is located on the island of Zealand. Scientists believe that it is a huge block of ice from the Ice Age that has since melted. Today, the lake is very popular for water sports of all kinds, but hikers and runners also get their money's worth on its shores. The circuit around the lake is around 28 kilometers long.

Mossø
Mossø is located in the southern part of the sea highlands (Søhøjlandet) and is characterized by wonderful nature. During your circumnavigation you should definitely climb the “Sugar Loaf”, a steep hill (108 meters) near Klostermølle, because from here you have one of the most beautiful views in Denmark with a fantastic view over the lake highlands and the Mossø. The round trip is approx. 28 kilometers long.

Recommended route around Mossø
Stadil Fjord
The freshwater lake is a shallow lake with a maximum depth of just 2.5 meters. Together with Vest Stadil Fjord, Stadil Fjord has been designated a protected wetland. A walk around it is about 30 kilometers long and beautiful.

Tissø
Lake Tissø is only about 4 km from Höng. The nature reserve has a rich bird life, but it has become famous for its archaeological finds from the Viking Age. You should definitely visit the permanent exhibition after your 20-kilometre walk around the lake.

Furesø
Furesø is Denmark's deepest lake with an average depth of 13.5 meters and is protected as a “Natura 2000 area”. Due to its proximity to Copenhagen, it can be easily reached by car or bicycle. And it's well worth a visit, as it offers great nature, water sports and great places to eat. A circumnavigation of Furesø is approx. 21 km long.

Skanderborg sø
Skanderborg Sø is located in the direct catchment area of Skanderborg, around 2 kilometers from the lake. The lake is well-known and popular with anglers, as it offers a wide range of fish species. But water sports enthusiasts and hikers also get their money's worth. The circuit around the lake is around 20 kilometers long.

Søndersø
Lake Søndersø is embedded in the Maribo Lakes Nature Park and is the largest of the lakes. The landscape, which is characterized by manor houses and surrounded by fields, meadows, moorland and woodland, invites you to explore. At 852 hectares, Søndersø is the largest of the lakes. It consists of three basins and is the most island-rich lake in Denmark. A walk around the lake is approx. 23 kilometers long.
