The ten largest lakes in Trentino/South Tyrol
With over 300 beautiful lakes, Trentino/South Tyrol has a very rich supply of lakes and it was not easy to find the ten largest. However, as always with the Iron Lake Challenge, only the lakes that are located entirely in South Tyrol or Trentino count. The famous Lake Garda, for example, is huge and is also partly in the area of this challenge, but it is also partly in Veneto and therefore does not count. But you still have to go around it if you want to complete the Iron Lake Challenge Italy want to finish ;-). That's why we've come up with the following list of the ten largest lakes in Trentino/South Tyrol:
Lake Reschen (Reschensee)
Lake Resia is an artificially dammed lake with a water surface area of 6.77 km², making it the largest lake in the Trentino/South Tyrol region. A famous hiking, Nordic walking and running trail with a hard surface, which is 15.3 km long, runs around Lake Reschen. It is beautifully nestled in the mountains and the church tower peeking out of the water is world-famous.

Lago di Caldonazzo
Lake Caldonazzo is located in Valsugana, a few kilometers from Lake Levico. Its water surface area is 5.4 km², making it the largest natural lake in Trentino/South Tyrol. On a walk around the lake, you will see beautiful baths and great beaches. There are also beautiful villages such as Caldonazzo, Calceranica and Tenna. If you want to walk around Lake Caldonazzo, you will have to cover a distance of around 15 kilometers.
Tour suggestions for circumnavigating Lake Caldonazzo:
Lake Molveno
At 3.41 km², Lago di Molveno is the second largest natural lake in Trentino. It is known for its intense blue color. This is due to the fact that there is very little phytoplankton in the water. Its relatively warm water means that it very rarely freezes over. It is thought to have been formed by a rockslide around 1000 BC. To walk around it, you have to reckon with about 11 beautiful kilometers.

Tour suggestions for circumnavigating Lake Ledro:
Lake Caldaro
Lake Kaltern, which borders the municipality of Kaltern, is only about 11 kilometers from Bolzano and is 1.47 km² in size. Lake Kaltern is considered one of the warmest bathing lakes in the Alps. Its water temperature can reach 28 °C in summer and the bathing season is from May to September. It takes about 5.3 kilometers to walk around Lake Kaltern.
Tour suggestions for circumnavigating Lake Kaltern:
Zoccolo Lake
At 1.3 km², the Zoggler Lake is the largest reservoir in the Ultental Valley. When its construction began in 1955, it met with great resistance. Over two dozen farms and fertile land were lost to the lake. Some of the farms could look back on a history of up to six hundred years. A walk around the lake will take you about 8.5 kilometers along the lake.
Suggested tour around the Zoggler reservoir:
Vernag Lake
At 1.26 km², the Vernagt reservoir is also a large South Tyrolean reservoir. The reservoir and the adjacent municipality of Schnals lie at an altitude of 1689 meters. The tower of the "Leiter-Kirchlein" rises out of the lake in spring when the water level is low and is then a popular photo hotspot. To circumnavigate the Vernagt reservoir, you have to walk about 10 kilometers.

Lake Valentine to the Muta
Lake Valentine to the Muta is located at an altitude of 1450 meters and covers an area of 89 hectares. The circular trail is approx. 5 kilometers long and is easy to walk.
