Denmark can look back on a long tradition and eventful history and forms the link in Europe between Scandinavia and the rest of mainland Europe. The people of Denmark are friendly and welcoming, but they are also proud of their history. The country is famous for its thousands of islands, its rugged coastline and has Europe's only direct border with Canada in Greenland. But Denmark also has numerous beautiful lakes that have a charm all of their own with their naturalness and wealth of flora and fauna.
How about cycling around Denmark's ten largest lakes and collecting the coveted Bike Lake Challenge collector's medal in the “Denmark” edition?

Rules
The rules for Bike Lake Challenge Denmark are very simple. Nevertheless, we would like to clarify them once again at this point:
- Sign up for the Bike Lake Challenge Denmark!
- To conquer the Bike Lake Challenge Denmark and earn the beautiful collector's medal, you have to cycle around Denmark's ten largest lakes after registering.
- Each lake must be circumnavigated “in one go”. This means that you are welcome to take breaks, but you should complete the lake in one day (unless there is a special regulation for the lake in question). You are of course welcome to split the 10 lakes into different days. Only do one lake per day, because you want to enjoy this time!
- We trust you that you have really circumnavigated the lakes. However, if you want to be included in the time ranking, we need a copy of your tracking. We don't care what you use (watch, smartphone or app).
General PLEASE NOTE!
- Please note that the applicable road traffic regulations apply in public traffic areas and along roads and cycle paths. So move with consideration.
- You circumnavigate the lakes at your own risk and at your own risk. The operator of this website assumes no liability.
- Please heed medical advice if necessary or have a medical examination before the start of the Challenge. You are responsible for your own health, equipment and condition. Breaking off a tour is not a disgrace, health always comes first!
Ein paar wichtige Regeln zum Umgang mit der Natur
- Please take into account the local instructions for the protection of nature.
- Please do not ride off the beaten track.

- Please do not collect rocks or minerals.
- Please do not collect mushrooms.
- Please do not leave trash lying around.
- Please do not feed animals.
- Please do not make an open fire.

This should be obvious to all of us, but it doesn't hurt to remember it from time to time.

The ten largest lakes in Denmark
Denmark's lakes are really very varied, large and beautiful. Unfortunately, we were unable to include the brackish water lake Saltbæk Vig, as it could only be circumnavigated via the dyke, which cannot be entered due to nature conservation regulations. Tømmerby Fjord should also be listed as one of Denmark's ten largest lakes, but it can only be circumnavigated via a busy road, which is why we decided against it.
Arresø
Arresø was originally a fjord arm of the Kattegat and was formed around 2000 to 3000 years ago when the land north of the lake slowly rose, separating the lake from the sea. Today, the lake is an important bird sanctuary and is also popular with local recreationists. The circumnavigation of the lake is approx. 41 kilometers long (depending on the route taken)

Lake Esrom
Lake Esrom is located on the island of Zealand. Scientists believe that it is a huge block of ice from the Ice Age that has since melted. Today, the lake is very popular for water sports of all kinds, but hikers and runners also get their money's worth on its shores. The circuit around the lake is around 28 kilometers long.

Mossø
Mossø is located in the southern part of the sea highlands (Søhøjlandet) and is characterized by wonderful nature. During your circumnavigation you should definitely climb the “Sugar Loaf”, a steep hill (108 meters) near Klostermølle, because from here you have one of the most beautiful views in Denmark with a fantastic view over the lake highlands and the Mossø. The round trip is approx. 28 kilometers long.

Stadil Fjord
The freshwater lake is a shallow lake with a maximum depth of just 2.5 meters. Together with Vest Stadil Fjord, Stadil Fjord has been designated a protected wetland. A walk around it is about 30 kilometers long and beautiful.

Furesø is Denmark's deepest lake with an average depth of 13.5 meters and is protected as a “Natura 2000 area”. Due to its proximity to Copenhagen, it can be easily reached by car or bicycle. And it's well worth a visit, as it offers great nature, water sports and great places to eat. A circumnavigation of Furesø is approx. 21 km long.
