RULES
The rules for Iron Lake Challenge Lazio are very simple. Nevertheless, we would like to clarify them once again at this point:
- Sign up for the Iron Lake Challenge Latium!
- To conquer the Iron Lake Challenge Lazio and earn the beautiful collector's medal, you must walk around the ten largest lakes in Lazio after registering. Lakes that are partly on the territory of other federal states are not included in this challenge.
- Bicycles, skates, etc. are not allowed, but you are welcome to hike or run.
- Each lake must be circumnavigated "in one piece" unless special rules apply (see below in the descriptions of the lakes). This means that you are welcome to take breaks, but you should complete the lake within one day. Of course you can divide the 10 lakes into different days. Do only one lake per day, because you want to enjoy this time!
- The Iron Lake Challenge Latium has no time limit. This means that you can cycle around the ten lakes over several years.
- We trust you that you have really circumnavigated the lakes. However, if you want to be included in the time ranking, we need a copy of your tracking. We don't care what you use (watch, smartphone or app).
General PLEASE NOTE!
- Please note that traffic rules apply in public traffic areas and along roads and cycle paths. So move with consideration.
- You circumnavigate the lakes at your own risk and at your own risk. The operator of this website assumes no liability.
- Please heed medical advice if necessary or have a medical examination before the start of the Challenge. You are responsible for your own health, equipment and condition. Breaking off a tour is not a disgrace, health always comes first!
A few important rules for dealing with nature during your lake tour:
- Please take into account the local instructions for the protection of nature.
- Please do not go off the trails.
- Please do not make noise.

The ten largest lakes in Lazio
Lake Bolsena
Lake Bolsena (Italian Lago di Bolsena) is 113.5 km² in size and is located around 90 kilometers north of Rome in the province of Viterbo. It is almost completely circular, which is due to the fact that water has collected in the caldera of a former volcano. Lake Bolsena is only fed by rainwater and underground springs, which is why it takes around 120 years for its water (which is of excellent quality) to be completely replaced. There are two small islands in the lake. For many centuries, various popes had their residences on Lake Bolsena. Walking around the lake gives you 43 kilometers of beautiful shoreline.
Route recommendations for circumnavigating Lake Bolsena:
Lago di Bracciano
Lake Bracciano (Lago di Bracciano) is a circular lake located around 35 kilometers north of the city center of Rome. At 57.5 km², it is the second largest lake in Lazio and is also a filled caldera of a volcano. Hot mineral springs and gas leaks in its surroundings are impressive proof of its volcanic origin. The lakeshore is shared by the municipalities of Anguillara Sabazia, Bracciano and Trevignano Romano. To circumnavigate Lago di Bracciano, you have to walk around 33 kilometers.

The approx. 10 km² Lago del Salto is an artificial lake created by a dam and embedded in a mountainous forest area. A walk around the lake is about 40 kilometers long.

Lago Albano
The approx.

Lago di Martignano is located very close to the eastern shore of Lago di Bracciano and, at 2.44 km², is not particularly large. The lake is located in the protected zone of the Regional Natural Park of the Lakes of Bracciano and Martignano. It is also of volcanic origin and the ancient Romans were already aware of its beauty, so much so that they built the first villas on its shores. In 1972, the exterior shots of the fairy's house for the Pinocchio film series took place here. To walk around the lake on foot, you have to reckon with a 14-kilometre walk along the shore.
