Sweden is famous for its beautiful lakes. These wild jewels surrounded by healthy nature are huge in Sweden and can only be circumnavigated with a real love of adventure! Vänern, the largest lake in the European Union, is located in Sweden and this lake alone offers a great challenge if you want to circumnavigate it. And Vänern is not the only giant in Sweden. But because of the size of the Swedish lakes, it is a very special challenge to walk around them. Are you up for the challenge?

The ten largest lakes in Sweden
The Iron Lake Challenge Sweden is something very special, because with the famous Lake Vänern, Sweden has the largest lake in the European Union and its more than 600 kilometers of shoreline alone are more than most Iron Lake country challenges. For this reason, you will (after the successful circumnavigation on foot) receive the Iron Lake MICRO collector's medal in the “Vänern” edition in addition. But the other lakes in Sweden are also huge and I'm very curious to see if anyone can complete this challenge! Actually, Torneträsk should also be part of this challenge, but unfortunately I couldn't find any information on whether it can be circumnavigated with a manageable amount of effort. That's why it remains out (for the time being). The same applies to Akkajaure. I couldn't find any routes that would make it possible to circumnavigate it with realistic effort.
Vänern
Located in the southwest of Sweden, Lake Vänern is not only the largest lake in Sweden, it is also the largest lake in the EU and the third largest lake in Europe! Over 22,000 islands lie in this huge lake, illustrating its enormous size. Circumnavigating Lake Vänern on foot is a challenge in itself, which is why we also created the Iron Lake Micro Challenge „Vänern“ offer. Of course, you will also receive this medal in the “Vänern” edition when you have circumnavigated this lake. About 640 kilometers are waiting for you! But that's not all.... Lake Vänern is also part of the Iron Lake Challenge “European Union”, the absolute European supreme discipline in terms of Iron Lake Challenges!

Tour recommendations for circumnavigating Lake Vänern:
Vättern (Lake Vättern)
Lake Vättern is the eleventh largest lake in Europe and the second largest lake in Sweden. The larger towns of Jönköping and Huskvarna are located directly on the lake. Circumnavigating Lake Vättern is a challenge of around 300 kilometers. Of course there is also an Ironlake MICRO Challenge for the Vättern in the “Vättern” edition. If you are registered for the ILC Schwedena and have circumnavigated Vättern, you will also receive the ILC MICRO collector's medal.

Tour recommendations for circumnavigating Vättern:
Mälaren (Lake Mälaren)
Lake Mälaren is the third largest lake in Sweden and about twice the size of Lake Constance. The cities of Stockholm, Södertälje, Västerås, Enköping and Köping are located on its shores. In addition to these cities and numerous smaller towns, the shores of this lake offer a lot of history and wonderful places to stop for refreshments.

Tour recommendations for circumnavigating Lake Mälaren:
Hjälmaren
Lake Hjälmaren is the fourth largest lake in Sweden. On its shores lies the city of Örebro, which is also the provincial capital. You may remember the 25th chapter of “Nils Holgerson”, where the lake also plays a role. The lake contains around 1300 islands of different sizes. It is particularly famous among canoeists for its many canals (see photo). You have to cover a distance of approx. 150 kilometers to completely circle the lake.

Tour recommendations for circumnavigating Hjälmaren:
Storsjön
Storsjön is the fifth largest lake in Sweden and is said to be home to a monster 🙂 The nature surrounding it is beautiful and well worth a visit. Nevertheless, the 174-kilometer circuit around this lake remains a real challenge.

Tour recommendation for the circumnavigation of Storsjön
Siljan
Siljan is the seventh largest lake in Sweden and is said to have been formed by the impact of an asteroid around 370 million years ago. Numerous boats offer sightseeing tours here. If you have to walk around the lake, then 120 beautiful kilometers await you!

Tour recommendations for circumnavigating the Siljan
Hornavan is the eighth largest lake in Sweden and lies far to the north, in Lapland. Over 400 islands and a footpath of over 200 kilometers give you an idea of the challenge of this lake. Whether you want to hike, walk or explore nature in other ways, the Hornavan offers you the opportunity, but also a real challenge.

Tour recommendations for circumnavigating the Hornavan:
Uddjaure
Uddjaure (Sweden's tenth largest lake) is also located in the north of Sweden, in the province of Norbottens län. The lake is known as a wonderful destination for kayakers. But hikers and runners also get their money's worth, even if they have about 100 kilometers of shoreline ahead of them.

Tour recommendations for circumnavigating the Uddjaure:
Storavan
Storavan is the southernmost of the large lakes in the northern Swedish province of Norbottens. Like the other lakes in this area, Storavan offers pure nature with numerous bird, fish and animal species. A circumnavigation is about 120 kilometers long.

Tour recommendations for circumnavigating the Storavan:
Bolmen
Bolmen is the largest lake in the western part of Småland. The word “Bolmen” means “big lake”, and it really is. The lake is said to have over 300 islands and is very rich in fish. A circumnavigation is about 120 kilometers long, but well worth it.
