The ten largest lakes in Ireland
Lough Corrib
Lough Corrib is the largest lake in the Republic of Ireland and is located in the west of the island. Walking around it is a challenge, but also an experience. You should definitely visit the ruins of the Annaghdown Churches and you will find beautiful islands to the east of the lake. The circumnavigation is around 117 kilometers long, which is why you should plan at least one overnight stay.

Lough Derg (Loch Deirgeirt)
Lough Derg is the third largest lake in Ireland and one of the three lakes to which the famous “Shannon” widens in its course. Attention! There is a second lake (near the border with Northern Ireland) of the same name. Lough Derg is stretched in its length, so that it can be up to 35 kilometers long. So a circumnavigation is about 110 kilometers long.

Lough Carra
Lough Carra in the west is an internationally recognized bird sanctuary and a so-called “marl lake”. This lake has many interesting details to offer. The western shore lies in an area of limestone. The chalk prevents the growth of aquatic plants and algae and even reeds are very rare. The purity and color of the water is produced by the marl. The circumnavigation of the lake is about 40 kilometers long.
