The beautiful state of Lower Saxony is the second largest state in the Federal Republic of Germany and ranks 4th in terms of population. Its beaches on the North Sea are famous, but Lower Saxony also has many large and beautiful lakes to offer. These are mostly of natural origin, but reservoirs and flooded open pit mines also contribute to the diversity.

The Iron Lake Challenge Lower Saxony leads you about 145 kilometers along the shores of the lakes of Lower Saxony and offers a lot of potential for unforgettable moments.
RULES
The rules for the Iron Lake Challenge Niedersachsen are very simple. Nevertheless, we would like to clarify them again at this point:
- Register for the Iron Lake Challenge Niedersachsen (click on the logo below)!
- To conquer this challenge and get the beautiful collector's medal "Niedersachsen edition“ zu verdienen, musst Du die zehn größten Seen Niedersachsens zu Fuß umrunden.
- Bicycles, skates, etc. are not allowed, but you are welcome to hike or run.
- Each lake must be circumnavigated "in one piece". This means that you are welcome to take breaks, but you should complete the lake within one day, unless there is a special regulation. Of course you can divide the 10 lakes into different days. Do only one lake per day, because you want to enjoy this time!
- You have as long as you want for the ten lakes. You don't have to go around them within a year. You should enjoy and not rush!
- We trust you that you have really circumnavigated the lakes. However, if you want to be included in the time ranking, we need a copy of your tracking. We don't care what you use (watch, smartphone or app).
General PLEASE NOTE!
- Please note that the Road Traffic Act applies in public traffic areas and along roads and cycle paths. So move considerately.
- You circumnavigate the lakes at your own risk and at your own risk. The operator of this website assumes no liability.
- Please heed medical advice if necessary or have a medical examination before the start of the Challenge. You are responsible for your own health, equipment and condition. Breaking off a tour is not a disgrace, health always comes first!
A few rules for dealing with nature during your lake tour:
- Please take into account the local instructions for the protection of nature.
- Please do not go off the trails.
- Please do not make noise.
- Please do not collect rocks or minerals.
- Please do not collect mushrooms.
- Please do not leave trash lying around.
- Please do not feed animals.
- Please do not make an open fire.

This should be obvious to all of us, but it doesn't hurt to remember it from time to time.

The ten largest lakes in Lower Saxony
Lower Saxony offers a great variety of lakes from natural inland lakes, reservoirs and flooded open pit mines. It was not easy for us to find the ten largest lakes, because they must be able to be circumnavigated and lie entirely on Lower Saxony territory.
Lake Steinhude
Lake Steinhude is the largest and most famous lake in Lower Saxony and the ninth largest lake in Germany. Thus it is also part of the Iron Lake Challenge Germany! It is located near Hannover and is part of the nature park Steinhuder Meer and the Weser area. This lake is amazingly shallow (water depth barely reaches 2.5m). A circumnavigation on foot will cost you about 32 kilometers. But it is worth it!

See früher „Elmendorfer or Ammersches Meer“ hieß. Der drittgrößte Binnensee Niedersachsens liegt auf einem Salzstock der irgendwann in der Vergangenheit zum Teil eingestürzt ist, so dass sich dort Wasser ansammelte und der See entstand. Ca. 13 Kilometer musst Du bei der Umrundung zurücklegen.

Great Sea (South Brokmerland)
The naturally formed lake is the fourth largest inland lake in Lower Saxony and is located in the Emden area. The lake is divided into a northern and southern part. But of course we circumnavigate both in their entirety. There are certainly different ways to circumnavigate the Great Sea, but you have to reckon with about 15 kilometers

Oker Dam
The Okertalsperre, located in the Harz Mountains, is intensively used for tourism and that's no wonder, because it's really beautiful there! Numerous side arms create a wonderful nature and there is a beautiful and well-developed circular route that leads you along the shore for about 19.4 kilometers.
Suggested tours around the Okertal reservoir
Lake Alfsee
The Alfsee is a reservoir near Osnabrück. Although it also has a water surface of about 2.2 square kilometers, but you can make a circuit if you walk or run about 8 kilometers. Even if it is somewhat smaller than the others, it is worth a visit.

Granetal Dam
The Granetal Dam is located in Goslar, Lower Saxony. It was originally built to ensure the drinking water supply, flood protection and power generation. The approx. 14.5 kilometer long circular trail is well developed and leads you through beautiful flora.
Suggested tours around the Granetal Dam
Bederkesa Lake
Lake Bederkesa is a bog lake in northern Lower Saxony and has an average depth of just over one meter. Numerous birds love the vegetation here. You can easily walk around the lake on a circular path with a length of almost 7 kilometers.

Geeste storage reservoir (Speichersee Geeste)
The Geeste reservoir was originally built to ensure cooling at the Emsland nuclear power plant, which is about 12 kilometers away. In the meantime, the beautiful little lake is used as a valuable local recreation area with a swimming beach and refreshment stops. By the way, the nuclear power plant has also been shut down since April 2023. A tour around the reservoir takes you along the approx. 6.5 km long lakeside circular path.

Thülsfeld Dam
The Thülsfeld Dam is also a reservoir and is located between Cloppenburg and Fiesoythe. It was built as flood protection and is one of the northernmost dams in Germany. A circumnavigation leads you about 10 kilometers along the shore.
