No matter what you want to see in Salzburger Land, you shouldn't forget the beautiful lakes. These are very diverse, crystal clear and have excellent water quality. But their shores are also a paradise for hikers and runners.

The ten largest lakes in Salzburg
You will notice that the Wolfgangsee, the largest lake in the province of Salzburg, is missing. This is because it is partly located in Upper Austria. A few reservoirs are also missing, as these are high mountain reservoirs that cannot be circumnavigated due to adjacent rock faces. But we think that the selection of lakes in the Iron Lake Challenge Salzburg is wonderful.
Wallersee
Lake Wallersee is located north-east of the city of Salzburg in the district of Salzburg-Umgebung and is part of the Salzburg lake district. It is popular with water sports enthusiasts, with windsurfers in particular appreciating the good winds there. But hikers, runners and recreational athletes of all kinds also appreciate the Wallersee. The circular trail is around 17 kilometers long, making it perfect for a nice walk or a long run.
Tour recommendations for circumnavigating Lake Wallersee:
Obertrumer See
Tour recommendations for circumnavigating Lake Obertrum:
Zeller See
Lake Zell is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful lakes in Austria. In summer, it becomes a popular bathing lake as it gets up to 23 degrees. Three lidos on the shores of Lake Zell invite you to enjoy a relaxing swim. But the nature and views around the lake are also a dream. Around 11 kilometers of beautiful lakeside path invite you to walk around the lake.
Tour suggestions for circumnavigating Lake Zell:
Mattsee
The Mattsee (also known as Niedertrumer See) is the largest of the three Trumer lakes in Flachgau, which belong to the Salzburg lake district, with an area of 3.5 square meters. The Mattsee is popular with locals as a bathing lake, but hiking, running and other outdoor sports are also popular at the lake. A circuit around the Niedertrumer See is approx. 12.5 kilometers long.
Tour recommendations for circumnavigating the Mattsee:
Fuschlsee
The Fuschlsee is a lake in the Salzkammergut with an area of 2.65 km2. The surrounding mountain landscape of the Alps gives Lake Fuschlsee a beautiful setting. Its crystal-clear water has excellent water quality and shines in the most beautiful shades of blue and green. A walk around Lake Fuschl is approx. 11 kilometers long.
Tour recommendations for circumnavigating Lake Fuschl:
Grabensee
The Grabensee is a moorland lake and the smallest of the three Trumer lakes. The lake and its surroundings are popular with nature lovers seeking peace and quiet. It can be used for swimming, but is especially beautiful for hikers and runners. The circuit is approx. 7 kilometers long.
Tour recommendations for circumnavigating the Grabensee:
Wieseltalstausee
The Wiestal reservoir is located in a side valley of the Salzach Valley, around 15 kilometers from Hallein. The lake is beautifully situated, but is relatively cold for swimming as the water comes from the mountains. You have to walk about 11 kilometers around the lake.

Lower Durlassboden reservoir
The Lower Durlassboden reservoir near Gerlos makes this beautiful mountain region a real summer highlight, as it warms up to a pleasant 21 degrees Celsius and is perfect for a dip. However, the approx. 10-kilometre circular hike around the reservoir with refreshment stops at Alpengasthof Finkau, Bärschlagalm and Seestüberl are also a real highlight.

Hintersee
The 0.8 square meter Hintersee lake in Salzburger Land is an insider tip for nature lovers. The green vegetation of the shore area is framed by beautiful mountain scenery. An approx. 5 kilometer long family-friendly circular hiking trail impresses with its unspoilt, freely accessible shore zones.

Unterer Bockhartsee
The "Untere Bockhartsee" is a high mountain reservoir located at 1872 m above sea level in the Bockharttal valley in southern Pongau.
Uwe
