The year 2023 has passed very quickly for me and for all of us and I would like to thank you all from the bottom of my heart. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year .
I would like to use this post to look back on 2023 with happiness and satisfaction and give a brief outlook for next year. I think there will be lots of interesting facts and figures and I would be delighted to receive lots of feedback (in the comments, on Facebook or on our Instagram channel). But I would also like to give you a gift suggestion if you don't have any ideas for your loved ones yet. I would like to start with that right away:

The Iron Lake Challenge sees the light of day
As a participant in the Iron Lake Challenge, you support the idea of contributing one million tree seedlings for our planet in order to reforest the world's severely depleted forests.
The "How" we have developed the "Trees4Breeze" initiative was quickly clarified. In a nutshell: A (hopefully fast-growing) team of athletes sweats and collects seedlings for reforestation with every calorie burned and every kilometer covered via an app.
Are you already in the Trees4Breeze-team? You are cordially invited! The price is just your sweat 🙂

An international NGO plants the seedlings and takes care of them until they have grown into strong trees and can look after themselves. So far so good.... but there's something missing, isn't there?
Of course, because someone has to pay for these seedlings! As we don't want to beg for donations, we came up with the idea of the Iron Lake Challenge! Most of the proceeds (after deducting the costs of the challenge) go towards financing the seedlings for reforestation.
Ich darf Dir Anfang Dezember stolz mitteilen, dass wir gemeinsam bereits über 27.000 Bäume aufforsten konnten. Das ein wunderbarer Anfang, auch wenn die Million noch weit weg ist.

December 2022
The Iron Lake Challenge Bavaria goes online! With a lot of commitment and simple means and using existing resources (this blog), and pre-financing the medals from private funds and with a few euros advertising budget, you have booked the first starts. In December 2022, I was actually very happy to receive the first entries and the first circumnavigations of Bavarian lakes. Of course, I also set off with a buddy, because my motto is "It's the experience that counts, not the result!". But just this much in advance.... You have been much busier on the lakes this year than we have!
Januar 2023
Franz aus Linz war es, der als Erster bezüglich einer “Austria“-Edition per privater Nachricht auf Instagram gefragt hatte, und sein Wunsch war mir Befehl, so dass im Januar 2022 die Iron Lake Challenge Austria online ging.
Die zehn größten Seen Österreichs sind aber hart zu umrunden, denn die Seen in diesem wunderschönen Land sind nicht nur groß, sondern in zwei Fällen (Traunsee und Weissensee) haben sie steile Ufer, so dass man man bei einer Umrundung auch noch ordentlich Höhenmeter kraxeln muss. So hielten sich die Buchungen auf kleinem Niveau, sollten aber im Laufe des Jahres mehr werden. Aber die Bayern buchten fleißig, so das im Februar die Setzlinge das erste Mal (fast ganz) durch die Iron Lake Challenge bezahlt werden konnten.
February 2023
The Iron Lake Challenge Switzerland goes online but only two starts are booked for Switzerland in the whole month! I can well understand people, because Switzerland is even tougher than Austria. Almost 600 kilometers have to be covered on foot to earn the medal. That's quite a house number! I anticipate.... there will be fewer than 15 bookings in the whole of 2023. But that's not a problem, so I'll be even happier when I can finally send the first medal to Switzerland!
The "Trees4Breeze" team is slowly getting bigger (in February we are already 62 hikers, runners and other athletes) and so more trees are being "sweated" 🙂 I'm happy about that, but of course they also need to be financed. I'm testing different forms of "low budget" marketing and I'm happy as a clam about every booking.

The Iron Lake Challenge Germany goes online to offer you the three German-speaking countries in full. From now on you can apply for the “German”-edition Medal effort. Just over 500 kilometers of shoreline, a big board! There are very few bookings, but that doesn't matter. Thanks to the increase in bookings in Bavaria and Austria, the trees can continue to be financed. And what about financing the medals? Well...it'll come 🙂 I'm pleased that some tourism websites are reporting on the Iron Lake Challenge in some social media channels. That helps and shows me that I'm on the right track!
April 2023
The Iron Lake Challenge North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) goes online. I immerse myself in a new world during my research. In NRW, I only come across man-made lakes in the top 10. But I am fascinated by this urban charm with a mystical "lost places" feeling as I marvel at the mixture of construction and reconquest by nature. And then I get a call from Hellweg Radioa small but excellent radio station in NRW. They broadcast a short interview with me about the Iron Lake Challenge and within an hour I had 17 new bookings for NRW. What a dream!
May 2023
The Iron lake Challenge Sachsen is online! If I've already immersed myself in a new world of lakes in NRW, then the next step up awaits me in Saxony. Here, the lakes are not only dammed, but most of the old mining pits have been flooded. And they were and are huge! I rummage through old pictures, reports, newspaper articles and reports from the water management authorities. It's fascinating to see what has become of the old sinkholes and I read that many of these projects are still ongoing. So it's getting even better! Beautiful landscapes have been created that are already part of nature again. Really cool!
Thanks to the bookings in Bavaria and NRW, the seedlings can also be financed in May, and our tool for documenting the lakes and automatically awarding life score points goes online. Now every Iron Lake Challenge has its own honor roll and the "Life Lake Museum" goes online. Now every participant can see how many Life Score points they have collected so far.
Digression on the Life Score pointsn: Für 10 volle Kilometer bekommst Du einen Life-Score Punkt gutgeschrieben. Als ich mit meinem Kumpel Simon um den Ammersee laufe (46km) sehe ich wie hart 4 Life-Score Points sein können 🙂 Das System wird übrigens noch um weitere Challenges erweitert und dann in die große “Timeless Challenge" is integrated. The aim is for you to be able to collect Life Score points in over 100 challenges from all areas of life in the near future.

Naja, das Tool ist noch ziemlich kompliziert und beinhaltet ein ein paar Bugs (Fehler), aber der Anfang ist gemacht. Übrigens wird es laufend weitere Optimierungen des Tools geben und hoffentlich sind dann auch die Fehler komplett korrigiert! Das geht manchmal etwas langsam, aber wir bemühen uns.
On May 30, I will be sending out the first medal! It goes to Tatjana, who completed the Iron Lake Challenge Bavaria in an absolute record time. I am thrilled!

The Iron Lake Challenge Schleswig Holstein goes online! My cellar is filling up with boxes full of medals. The Challenge seems to be going down very well in Schleswig Holstein, as almost 20 starts have been booked for June! That's wonderful, although not surprising, because the lakes there are incredibly varied and people there love being out in nature.
July 2023
The Iron Lake Challenge Brandenburg is now online. Brandenburg is particularly interesting for Berliners, as are its lakes, of course. A mix of natural and artificial lakes makes for a very special attraction and the first pictures of you on social media make an excellent impression.
I've now been on vacation for two weeks myself and I can see how this campaign is keeping me busy. I keep checking in on the beach and I'm happy to hear your feedback after various circumnavigations. The Facebook page now has over 1,000 followers and the "circumnavigation bear" is also going crazy on Instagram.

The Iron Lake Challenge Saxony-Anhalt and the Iron Lake Challenge Lower Saxony are online!
Nachdem ich im Urlaub Zeit zum Recherchieren hatte, können im August ZWEI Iron Lake Challenges online gehen. Während Sachsen-Anhalt auch zum großen Teil von Menschenhand ausgehobene- und dann geflutete Kohlegruben bietet, ist es in Niedersachsen erneut ein Mix aus natürlichen- und künstlichen Seen. Ich persönlich würde am Liebsten jeden einzelnen See umrunden und in mir reift ein Gedanke….!

The Iron Lake Challenge Baden Württemberg and Iron Lake Challenge Hesse sind online. Der Edersee (mit dem habe ich aus der Vergangenheit noch eine besondere Verbundenheit) ist nun endlich auch online 🙂 Baden Württemberg war schwierig. Die zwei größten Seen findet man schnell, dann wird´s schwer. Entweder kann man die Seen nicht umrunden (weil sie z.B. ein Altarm eines Flusses sind) oder sie liegen auf der Grenze zu einem andern Bundesland und zählen damit nicht. Erst wollten wir nur eine “Micro-Challenge” mit nur fünf Seen machen, haben uns dann aber doch gegen die Idee entschieden, da wir nur einzelne Seen als “Micro-Challenge” anbieten wollen. Die nun ausgewählten Seen sind super schön, aber nicht besonders groß.

The last German Iron Lake Challenge is now the Iron Lake Challenge Thuringia online. The funny thing was that the first five bookings for Thuringia came from Bavaria! Well, word seems to have got around that Thuringia has more to offer than just bratwurst! Personally, I'm really looking forward to the Hohenwarte reservoir.

Im November 2023 ging die Iron Lake Challenge Sizilien online. Sizilien ist eine wunderschöne Insel und bei Sonnenanbetern sehr beliebt. Aber es ist auch ein Ort mit viel Geschichte und tollen Seen. Perfekt also für eine Iron Lake Challenge. Ich hoffe, dass die Menschen dort (und natürlich die Urlauber) diese Idee auch so gut annehmen. Ich freue mich auf alle Fälle sehr, diese tolle Insel auch dabei zu haben. Diese ILC Sicilia zeigt auch wohin die Reise in der Zukunft gehen soll. Wir wollen diese Challenge auch international anbieten.
Ende November erreicht mich eine erstaunliche Nachricht aus der Schweiz. Lauréna Marie hat die Iron Lake Challenge Schweiz geschafft! Aber nicht einfach so. Sie hat sich am 22.10. angemeldet und innerhalb eines Monats über 600 Kilometer an den Ufern der zehn größten Schweizer Seen zurückgelegt! Das ist eine unglaublich schöne Leistung!

There will be no new Iron Lake Challenges this year, but we would like to further improve the quality of the existing challenges. This includes the tool, the tour descriptions, further information on the lakes, etc.
With the "Summit Challenge” ging außerdem die kleine Schwester der Iron Lake Challenge, für alle Liebhaber von Bergen und Gipfeln online, und auch hier wirst Du natürlich Life-Score Points sammeln können die Dir ebenfalls in dem “Life Museum” gutgeschrieben werden. Du merkst nun die Systematik und das Konzept der Timeless Challenge ganz deutlich 😉 Wir wollen, dass Du mit verschiedenen Challenges Life-Score Points verdienen kannst und mit den Erlösen die Finanzierung der Baum-Setzlinge sicherstellen und Dir eine immer attraktiver werdende Challenge bieten! Der Anfang ist gemacht, aber es ist noch ein weiter Weg!
Outlook for 2024
We want to go full throttle in 2024 and become more international! Imagine going on a bike trip (or camper trip) in Europe to the ten largest lakes in each country. Once there, you park your vehicle and cycle around the lakes on foot. How many experiences do you think you would collect, unforgettable moments that nobody could take away from you.
Unser Ziel ist es, Dir den gewohnten “Iron Lake Challenge” – Rahmen mit den dazugehörigen Medaillen zu bieten, die unvergesslichen Erlebnisse wirst Du selbst machen. Der “Abenteuer-Faktor” wird international wahrscheinlich noch etwas höher, denn nicht immer führen ausgebaute Wege um die Seen. Ich bereite gerade die Iron Lake Challenge für Sizilien vor und da heißt es, sich auch ab und zu ohne veröffentlichte Komoot-Route zurechtzufinden 😉 Hinzu kommt der weitere Ausbau der Timeless-Challenge und damit noch viele weitere Möglichkeiten für Dich!

As you know, we only send out the medals when you have earned them, i.e. after you have circumnavigated the ten lakes. Nevertheless, we have already been able to send numerous medals to proud athletes 🙂
