Boundless expanses, a fresh breeze, and picturesque polder landscapes – walking around the ten largest lakes in the Netherlands is an unforgettable adventure. Experience the perfect combination of a sporting challenge and the enjoyment of maritime nature. Take on this incredible challenge, preferably as part of the Iron Lake Challenge Netherland!
Rules
The rules for the Iron Lake Challenge Netherlands are very simple. However, we would still like to clarify them briefly here:
- Sign up for the Iron Lake Challenge Netherlands!
- To complete the Iron Lake Challenge Netherlands and earn that beautiful collector's medal, you must loop the ten largest lakes in the Netherlands on foot after signing up.
- Bicycles, skates, etc. are not allowed, but of course you are welcome to walk or run.
- Each lake must be circled 'in one go'. This means you are welcome to take breaks, but you must complete the loop within a single day. Of course, you can spread the 10 lakes over different days. Feel free to do just one lake per day, because you'll naturally want to enjoy your time!
- We trust you that you've really completed the loops around the lakes. But if you'd like to be listed in the time rankings, we'll need a copy of your tracking. We don't mind what you use to record it (whether it's a specific watch, smartphone, or app).

General: PLEASE NOTE!
Please keep in mind that traffic rules apply in public spaces and along roads and bike paths. Therefore, please move respectfully and show consideration for others.
You loop the lakes at your own risk and under your own responsibility. The operator of this website accepts no liability whatsoever.
If necessary, please consult a doctor or undergo a medical check-up before starting the challenge. You are solely responsible for your own health, equipment, and fitness. There is no shame in cutting a tour short—health always comes first!
A few important rules for respecting nature while circling the lakes:
- Please respect the local guidelines for nature protection.
- Please do not walk off the paths.
- Please don't make any noise.
- Please do not collect any stones or minerals.
- Please do not pick mushrooms.
- Please don't leave any waste behind.
- Please do not feed the animals.
- Please do not light open fires.
- Please don't pick the plants.
This should actually go without saying for all of us, but it doesn't hurt to be reminded of it from time to time.

The ten largest lakes in the Netherlands
When looking at the largest bodies of water in the Netherlands, we must make a geographical distinction: the two absolute giants, the IJsselmeer (approx. 1,100 km²) and the Markermeer (approx. 700 km²), lie entirely on Dutch territory and can, in theory, be looped on foot – but with distances ranging from 150 to more than 350 kilometers, these are multi-week expeditions rather than classic hikes. For these two large lakes, however, there will be a dedicated Iron Lake MICRO Challenge.
The following list therefore focuses on the ten largest classic inland lakes, border lakes, and closed-off sea arms in the Netherlands that lie entirely within Dutch territory and are perfectly suited for an active circumnavigation on foot.
Grevelingenmeer (Zeeland / Zuid-Holland)
- Loop distance: approx. 85 – 95 km (depending on the route over the dams)
- Description: The Grevelingenmeer is the largest saltwater lake in Western Europe and was created by damming a former inlet of the North Sea. Today, it is a protected nature paradise. A loop on foot leads across impressive dams such as the Brouwersdam and offers spectacular views of the open sea, sandbanks, and groups of wild seals

Volkerak (Noord-Brabant / Zeeland / Zuid-Holland)
- Loop distance: ca. 60 – 65 km
- Description: This large freshwater lake is strategically located at the junction of three provinces. Once a tidal waterway, it is now separated from the sea by the Delta Works. The challenging hike leads past impressive lock complexes, vast reed beds, and the pristine shores of the adjacent De Biesbosch National Park.

Veluwemeer (Gelderland / Flevoland)
- Loop distance: approx. 45 – 50 km (using the bridges)
- Description: The Veluwemeer is an elongated, shallow border lake that separates the mainland of Gelderland from the artificial polder province of Flevoland. The loop around it is scenically highly diverse: it combines dense forests and sandy beaches on one side with modern polder landscapes and historic Hanseatic cities such as Elburg and Harderwijk on the other.

Veerse Meer (Zeeland)
- Loop distance: ca. 50 – 55 km
- Description: This brackish water lake, artificially closed off from the sea in the heart of Zeeland, is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. The loop leads over the historic fortifications of the small town of Veere and the Veerse Gatdam, offering panoramic views of the many uninhabited islets in the lake, which today are strictly protected bird sanctuaries.

Lauwersmeer (Friesland / Groningen)
- Loop distance: approx. 43 km (official Lauwersmeer Circular Route)
- Description: This lake, formed by the damming of the former Lauwerszee, forms the heart of a beautiful national park in the north of the country. On foot, you follow a well-signposted route through rugged nature, light woodlands, and past birdwatching hides, from where you can spot rare white-tailed eagles and wild horses.

Tjeukemeer (Friesland)
- Loop distance: ca. 28 – 32 km
- Description: The largest true inland lake in the province of Friesland stands out for its vast, open polder landscape. Because the lake is very shallow, it is heavily used for sailing. A walk around the water takes you over dikes, past traditional Frisian farms, and offers an unobstructed view all the way to the horizon.

De Fluessen / Fluezen (Friesland)
- Loop distance: approx. 25 – 30 km (partly with local foot ferries)
- Description: This elongated lake in Friesland owes its distinctive shape to a glacial valley from the Ice Age. Together with the directly connected Heegermeer, it forms a massive body of water. A loop on foot leads through the typical Frisian landscape and requires the use of charming foot ferries, the famous 'pontjes', in some places

- Loop distance: ca. 22 – 26 km
- Description: Known worldwide for 'Sneekweek', the largest sailing event on European inland waters, this lake is also a highlight for hikers. The route around the water leads through idyllic water sports villages, past classic windmills, and along well-maintained lakeside paths with sweeping views of all the activity on the water.

- Description: This almost circular lake in the southwest of Friesland provides the perfect backdrop for a classic day hike. The lakeside path connects the picturesque village of Balk with the historic fortified town of Sloten – the smallest of the eleven Frisian cities. The flat route along the dikes offers pure tranquility amidst lush green meadows.
