Rules
The rules for the Iron Lake Challenge "Bavaria" are very simple. Nevertheless, we would like to clarify them again at this point:
- Sign up for the Iron Lake Challenge Bavaria!
- To conquer the Bavaria Iron Lake Challenge and earn the beautiful collector's medal, you have to walk around the ten largest lakes in Bavaria after your registration.
- Bicycles, skates, etc. are not allowed, but you are welcome to hike or run.
- Each lake must be circumnavigated "in one piece". This means that you are welcome to take breaks, but you should complete the lake within one day. Of course, you can divide the 10 lakes into different days. Do only one lake per day, because you want to enjoy this time!
- We trust you that you have really circumnavigated the lakes. However, if you want to be included in the time ranking, we need a copy of your tracking. We don't care what you use (watch, smartphone or app).
A few rules for dealing with nature during your lake tour:
- Please take into account the local instructions for the protection of nature.
- Please do not go off the trails.
- Please do not make noise.
- Please do not collect rocks or minerals.
- Please do not collect mushrooms.
- Please do not leave trash lying around.
- Please do not feed animals.
- Please do not make an open fire.
- Please do not pick plants.
This should actually be clear to all of us, but it doesn't hurt to remember it from time to time 😉 .
General PLEASE NOTE!
- Please note that the Road Traffic Act applies in public traffic areas and along roads and cycle paths. So move considerately.
- You circumnavigate the lakes at your own risk and at your own risk. The operator of this website assumes no liability.
- Please heed medical advice if necessary or have a medical examination before the start of the Challenge. You are responsible for your own health, equipment and condition. Breaking off a tour is not a disgrace, health always comes first!

The ten largest lakes in Bavaria
In the following we will introduce you to the largest lakes in Bavaria. They will accompany you during the challenge and you will experience great hours at them. These are the lakes that you will circumnavigate. We have deliberately not included Lake Constance, as it extends over three countries. But perhaps there will be a separate Challenge in this regard 😉 .
Chiemsee (8026 ha)
Lake Chiemsee is often called "the Bavarian Sea" and with its nearly 53 kilometers Shore length a real challenge for all runners and hikers. It may well be a few kilometers more, if, for example, you attach more importance to the panorama and the beauty of the paths. However, Lake Chiemsee offers beautiful lakeside promenades and great places to stop for a bite to eat during your tour. However, you should not take too long, because 53 kilometers are a real challenge.
Tour suggestions:
Lake Starnberg (5603 ha)
Lake Starnberg is considered the lake of "Beautiful and rich", but of course that is only part of the truth. Also at the Starnberger See you have to calculate with approx. 50 to 53 kilometer for a circumnavigation, even if it is somewhat smaller than the Chiemsee.
Top tip: Join the Bavaria Königsmarsch and you can use the Starnberger See with motivated like-minded people and conquered it also for the ILC Bavaria circumnavigated! When you register, enter the voucher code "Lake Challenge" and get an instant 5% discount. |
Tour suggestions:
- Komoot Umrundung des Starnberger See (Wanderung)
- Outdoor Active Umrundung des Starnberger See (Fahrradweg)
Ammersee (4606 ha)
The Ammersee is the third largest lake in Bavaria and offers you with its approx. 48 kilometers of shoreline the opportunity to collect kilometers in a beautiful landscape. You should definitely do this lake in the bathing season, because the cooling off at the beautiful swimming spots of the Ammersee is worthwhile. But also around the Ammersee you can expect beer gardens and great places to stop. But also many, great picnic spots.
Tour suggestions:
- Komoot Ammerseeumrundung (allerdings als Fahrradtour)
- Outdooractive Ammerseeumrundung (ebenfalls Fahrradtour)
As soon as we have taken the tour ourselves, we will be happy to post it here!
Walchensee (1616 ha)
The Walchensee can basically be divided into 25 kilometers be circumnavigated. However, you will then hike a small piece along the B11. There is even a tunnel through which you would have to hike. However, you can also bypass this tunnel. Basically, you have to calculate with a few kilometers more, so that you have a nice hiking trail and do not have to run or walk along the road.
Tour suggestions:
Tour suggestions:
Lake Brombach (910 ha)
The Great Brombachsee belongs to the Franconian Lake District and is separated by a wall from the Small Brombachsee and the Igelbachsee. You can of course run around all three lakes (approx. 29 kilometers) or only around the Great Brombach Lake (about 15 kilometers).
Tour suggestions:
Tegernsee (871 ha)
The circular route around the Tegernsee is approx. 20 kilometer long and yes, it is indeed one of the most beautiful in Bavaria. You can walk the entire route on a beautiful pedestrian path with views of the lake and the beautiful mountains of the Bavarian foothills.
Tour suggestions:
Staffelsee (798 ha)
If you want to master the circular route around the Staffelsee, you have to a little over 20km back. In return, a beautiful view of the Zugspitze region awaits you.
Tour suggestions:
Lake Waginger (661 ha)
Basically you have to distinguish whether you "only" go around the Waginger See and thus the just under 20km mastered, or whether one takes the Tachinger lake still with it (additionally approx. 10 kilometers more). Here it is only about the Waginger Lake, so the 20km.
Tour suggestions:
Simssee (641 ha)
The Simsee is located in the Rosenheim area and is the remainder of the "Rosenheimer See", which was huge in prehistoric times. If you want to run (or walk) around the Simsee, you have to cover about 18 kilometers. PLEASE NOTE! The southern shore is a nature reserve. Please do not leave the paths and follow our instructions!

Hallo.
Was für Zeitlimit ist für den gesamten Challenge, also 10 See ?
Hallo Jacek,
Du hast kein Zeitlimit! Du kannst Dir theoretisch sogar mehrere Jahre Zeit nehmen.
Hallo Anja,
vielen Dank für Dein Interesse. Die Reihenfolge ist die Folgende:
1. Du meldest Dich an
2. Du umrundest die Seen
Hallo Mario,
genau.
Uwe
